[Geoserver-users] SLD Editor?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good SLD editing tools that might exist?

Thanks, S.D.

Take the Internet to Go: Yahoo!Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more.

Hi Samuel,

Andrea just recently implemented an sld editor for the GeoServer web ui
which uses a text editor which support syntax highlighting. Details in
this email thread.

http://www.nabble.com/EditArea-integrated-on-trunk-t3853835.html

However its only available on the geoserver trunk on not on the stable (
1.5.x ) branch.

One of our summer of code students Anthony is also working on a project
to implement and SLD editor for GeoServer.

uDig also has an sld editor which is nice.

Sorry for potential reposting, but if you are an ArcMap user, there is a very handy tool available from :

http://arcmap2sld.geoinform.fh-mainz.de/ArcMap2SLDConverter_Eng.htm

You cannot edit the SLD directly, but it is rather handy to be able to do this from ArcMap.

Best regards,
Jason

Really cool … thanks

About SLD Editors, have you take a look to the one in the OpenLayers sandbox?

Hi,

Yes this is the MapBuilder’s one, it has been started last year and after 8 month of inactivity, restarted this spring. It’s now in a correct shape, but need to be completed.

Justin, Andrea, is the SoC student working on an AJAX based SLD Editor ?
If that’s the case it would be great to collaborate on it.

For your information, we’re finishing work on MapBuilder to make it compatible with Opera and Safari.

Cheers,

Since we’ve intergrated OpenLayers on MapBuilder (MapPaneOL), MapBuilder acts now as an OGC implementation overlay for OL (WMC, OWS-context, SLD, FE, …).
A lot of work has been done, an Olivier and Jean-Sebastien could help Anthony (I guess he’s the GSOC student) to dive into the code.

We’re totally open to modify things on it if necessary (UI design i not currently efficient enough, and it some functions are missing).
We’ve to integrate SLD Editor in two Map client projects during this summer, so help is greatly apreciated.

Olivier or Jean-Sebastien, could you send us a pointer to the code please ?

What's the status on MapPaneOL? Has it been released? Is it at least the default implementation on trunk?

Can the MapBuilder SLD editor stuff be packaged independently of the rest of MapBuilder? Can we make it so it doesn't rely on XML configuration files? I much prefer OpenLayers style configuration - just use pure javascript - and would prefer that the SLD editor fit in to that paradigm.

Hi Chris,

What's the status on MapPaneOL? Has it been released? Is it at least the default implementation on trunk?

MapPaneOL will be released with MapBuilder 1.5 (next release) and yes, it's the default implementation on trunk.

Can the MapBuilder SLD editor stuff be packaged independently of the rest of MapBuilder?

Olivier terral just craeted a maven build that compress the js libs, and create a single file with all this stuff. I'm pretty sure it could be packaged independantly, but how could you watch the result without displaying it in the MapPane ?

Can we make it so it doesn't rely on XML configuration files?

mmmh... Perhaps I'm wrong, but as described in the OGC specification SLD is an XML file isn't it ?

I much prefer OpenLayers style configuration - just use pure javascript - and would prefer that the SLD editor fit in to that paradigm.

Our main concern is to stay compatible with OGC specifications, if we cant do that with an harmonized configuration style between Openlayers and MapBuilder that's fit for us.

Jean-Sebastien will reply too and give you the link to Olivier Terral Sandbox.

By just relying on OpenLayers? I'm not exactly sure how the architecture will work, but I'd prefer an SLD editor that's a module that we can plug on top of OpenLayers and also in to MapBuilder.

Can we make it so it doesn't rely on XML configuration files?

mmmh... Perhaps I'm wrong, but as described in the OGC specification SLD is an XML file isn't it ?

Yes it is. But an SLD file is the _result_ of an SLD editor, not something that you need to supply on your system just to start the javascript. I want to be able to add an SLD editor the same way I add other things in OL, with just a javascript call for a component. It doesn't need to actually be part of OL, but I don't want the xml files that MapBuilder usually needs to start up. To use it as a preview map we'd have to write out multiple files, and it was a pain.

I much prefer OpenLayers style configuration - just use pure javascript - and would prefer that the SLD editor fit in to that paradigm.

OpenLayers does nothing with SLD files right now, except issue them with WMS requests. Where you can include an SLD inline or refer to a remote SLD.

yes just to load the basic structure of empty SLD file.
no, it needn't ,with httprequest is ok.
you are right , you could be start up with empty sld or sld in different location.

yes we can just use javascript , but we need to use Xpath function and dom element (createlement(), creatattribut(),etc)
it used now to do some modifcation in the sld file.
but we display the sldedtor with xsl.and maybe if you want display with just pure javascrpt, it would be asked a lot of code and time(maybe?!).

Why would it be so much code and time?

i suppose xsl code allows us to reduce code. but i just said maybe.

and would prefer that the SLD editor fit in to that paradigm.

Chris

How does Openlayer interprete sld file? it just asks to geoserver to do it or it does itself?

OpenLayers does nothing with SLD files right now, except issue them with WMS requests. Where you can include an SLD inline or refer to a remote SLD.

Since we've intergrated OpenLayers on MapBuilder (MapPaneOL), MapBuilder acts now as an OGC implementation overlay for OL (WMC, OWS-context, SLD, FE, ...).
A lot of work has been done, an Olivier and Jean-Sebastien could help Anthony (I guess he's the GSOC student) to dive into the code.

We're totally open to modify things on it if necessary (UI design i not currently efficient enough, and it some functions are missing). We've to integrate SLD Editor in two Map client projects during this summer, so help is greatly apreciated.

Olivier or Jean-Sebastien, could you send us a pointer to the code please ?

Hi,
Yes this is the MapBuilder's one, it has been started last year and after 8 month of inactivity, restarted this spring.
It's now in a correct shape, but need to be completed.
Justin, Andrea, is the SoC student working on an AJAX based SLD Editor ?
If that's the case it would be great to collaborate on it.
For your information, we're finishing work on MapBuilder to make it compatible with Opera and Safari.

Well, the student is geared towards an OpenLayers integration of
sorts afaik, but I guess he would be interested in looking at already existing (and working, too?) code anyways

Hi everybody,

I'm agree with Chris for have an SLDEditor with OL code style, It would be easy to integrate into mapbuilder so it's not a problem.

But I think it's important to keep 4 options in the sld editor : - possibility to specify and URL for modify an SLD who already exists
                                                                                          - if no url so create and SLD file
                                                                                          - possibility to save the SLD created (or modified)
                                                                                          - possibility to specify where it is saved if it's a new SLD

With keeping this 4 options mapbuilder could easily plays with OGC implementation of WMC, OWS-context. I think about <SLD> param in particularly (WMC spec).

But for me the point of the SLD editor is to create an SLD file. Our super basic AJAX SLD editor in GeoServer didn't need an SLD file to start up.

I much prefer OpenLayers style configuration - just use pure javascript -

I don't know if you have a look into SLD spec but the options are quasi infinite so time too.
Use xsl for parse the SLD file seems to be more efficient (because number of options) than use a pure ajax interface .
Parsing an sld file with pure javascript add a lot of code for each options.

In fact, we have work with the QGIS sld editor as example and created an xsl file to try to reproduce this interface.

To resume I think,
For modify an sld , xsl are better.
For create an sld , pure ajax interface are better .

Best regards,
Olivier

If I can put my 2 cents here, it would be nice for the editor to
be able and work with the standard GetStyle, PutStyle calls foreseen
by the SLD WMS extensions as well

Right ,
I had forgotten these possibilities

About that … in my spare time I’m going to update GeoServer PutStyles and create the GetStyles (which does not exist at this moment) … Andrea told me that for the PutStyles there were some issues, and in particular that it shouldn’t be OGC compliant … someone has more details about that?
