I’m trying to fill polygons with horizontal, vertical and forward and back diagonal hatching lines (with a transparent background).
ESRI’s AXL has some attributes for this - filltype=“horizontal” or filltype=“fdiag”
I wasn’t able to find an easy way in the SLD spec to do this, so I’m working on making little .gifs that tile well to use with ExternalGraphic.
Is there an easier way to do this that I’m missing?

The SLD specification might say if that can be done (http://www.opengeospatial.org/docs/02-070.pdf), but I haven't seen anything like that yet. The easiest way would be to use GIFs as your texture.
