The documentation shows that there should be a path in the API
/rest/sldservice/<layer>. However, when I look at the REST API directory I
don't see the sldservice path.
The SLD service is a community extension, did you go and install it first?
E.g, if you are using a 2.7.x series, you can get it from there:
http://ares.boundlessgeo.com/geoserver/2.7.x/community-latest/
No promises it will work, community modules are not supported
