Hello everybody
Together with Oskar Fonts we reactivated and transformed the
geoserver_test into a real master branch project which will be
synchronized for the origin properties (additions) to transifex.
However, for this project we set up extensions and community modules
as well. As a logical step we uploaded the available translations
initial to transifex.
In addition I created an ant script to synchronize the translated
properties back to a git clone. It checks the environment (transifex
configuration, transifex client tool as executable or in python
environment) and can be parameterized:
* to download only a specified language (e.g. "-Dtx.language=de" for
the German translations)
* to download only reviewed properties, all others are not in the
properties files (e.g. -Dtx.mode=reviewed)
Next steps:
* changing the maven configuration for properties files
(maven-resource-plugin with encoding set to ISO-8859-1 (see also "see
also"-section at
http://help.transifex.com/features/formats.html#java-property-files)
setting for these GeoServerApplication*.properties)
* (optionally) changing the root pom to define a profile which
executes the synchronization process from transifex into the working
copy --> I guess this should not be executed automatically
* Test the build WAR-Files in several environments (win, mac, linux)
different language settings
* create a developer documentation page that describes the basic steps,
* how to setup the environment (python, transifex client, etc)
* how to invoke the synchronization process
* how to initially setup a new language from existing properties
files not translated at transifex
* how to review translations
* investigate how to handle different release branches with a single
project setup at transifex (at the moment we have 3: 2.1.x, 2.2.x and
2.3.x which is the master)
All this cool stuff is not in the main repository at the moment.
Whoever likes to try this and improve the scripts can check it out
right here: https://github.com/fgdrf/geoserver/tree/gs-transifex
Current changes :
* build/gs-transifex.xml (which is an ant-script, description how to
use it is in the header)
* .tx folder with transifex config-file
* src/web/core/pom.xml (transition from antrun plugin- which replaced
build variables - to maven-resource-plugin which does the same in
addition to keeping the encoding)
@Jeffrey : interesting to see the a CI-Job synchronizes the translated
and reviewed properties back to git.
@All: I'm not sure how we can deal with conflicts, if developers
changed properties in their native language as well, or even core
developers changed all language file to remove odd properties). I
guess I would prefer to have a manually process right here, where
"Language maintainers" can take over it when a release process has
been started (e.g after the first RC)
@Chris : could you help us writing a gsip, I guess Oskar prepared
something already.
About the translation status and which properties are transfered I'm
not pretty sure : On the one hand it looks not very consistent for the
(end-) user/admin if we have mixed languages (origin and native) but
on the other hand a "everything or nothing" could scare translators if
they don't see their work has been integrated if a 100% status would
be required.
This in mind it would be great to have the proposed feature from
Andrea in the UI to switch between languages!! AND to add a link to
the footer of each page, like "Missing translation or have you seen
any error : please contribute" with a link to Transifex or even the
GeoServer Translation Guide page
@Stefan: Thanks for your hard work on getting German to the 100%. I
started reviewing and added some translation to the glossar. I guess
we can discuss this separately.
Everybody who reached this line is warmly welcome to give any
feedback. I'm and I guess Oskar and all the others would appreciate
your suggestions and comments
Thanks in advance
Frank

Hi list,
I am the "bad" user who pointed Andrea to the Transifex translations.
I hope that the way back from Transifex to GIT works fine in near future
because I now finished the missing part of the German translation.
Perhaps someone feels free to give me some comments about the
translation quality. I had some difficult decisions to do which
technical terms to translate or not.
Wish you all a happy new year!
Cheers
Stefan

Subject: [bulk]: Re: [Geoserver-users] Translations on transifex
Hi,
I prepared a little script that automatically links transifex
resources with the corresponding properties files on git repo.
Once automatically linked, simply pulling from tx and pushing to git
would synchronize the contents.
This method is meant to be automatic and exhaustive mapping. It
locates 26 translation resources instead of 15, but their names are
different, because they are generated automatically from file paths.
The script: https://gist.github.com/3918745
And the transifex repo generated from git contents:
https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/geoserver_test/
So, if we adapted the actual transifex project to use the script, it
could be run periodically, for example as part of the release process.
I can put some time to test & document this better, coordinated with
actual mantainer. Frank? Chris?
Auguri,
Oscar.
