[Geoserver-users] Translator Error

My Geoserver setup was working like a week ago. I didn't think I had changed
anything, but I tried connecting today with Udig and got the following. I
restarted geoserver and could log onto the administrative interface without
issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I think the problem is really with geoserver. If I grab my getCapabilities file

http://www.ig.utexas.edu:8080/geoserver/wms?request=GetCapabilities

it just returns:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>

I think my Geoserver installation has gotten trashed somehow. I deleted my feature types and tried to re-add one.

Hmmm... I guess you should have a big bad exception at the geoserver
startup? Can you paste it?
Moreover, which operating system are you on?

Ok. I deleted everything and downloaded a fresh 1.5.3-bin.zip file. In the
log of the startup I see:

5738 [WARNING] DefaultFactory - Unavailable authority factory: European
Petroleum Survey Group
org.opengis.referencing.FactoryException: Failed to connect to the EPSG
database.

How could this be? Is this not a file in the installation? An online
resource? How do I troubleshoot?

Thanks.

Are you running as root? Or a user that doesn't have a home directory?

On start up I think GeoServer makes the database at a default java location, which is like somewhere in a user home directory. And sometimes this messes up.

GeoServer uses the official EPSG database for managing srs codes.
Now, the database is an hsql one, that gets created on the fly
in the temp directory under $yourJavaTempDirectory/GeoTools/Databases/Hsql.

When running GeoServer out of Jetty the temp directory is usually
the current user temp, whilst if you're running GeoServer in tomcat
it's usually $tomcatdir/temp.

Try to find the directory and wipe out the GeoTools folder, then
start GeoServer, it should recreate the database from scratch and
then you should be ok.
Let me know if this works.

I don't see anything like this. There was a directory in /root/.java, but it just had a family of directories that each contained a file called prefs.xml.

I can find no such directory ANYWHERE on my server.

I ran an strace on the geoserver startup and can find no reference to such a file being created. Any ideas?
