Anton, I’m afraid you’re hitting one of those use cases that worked by accident, and broke by accident,
I don’t believe we ever meant configuration to be usable against a disabled store to start with.
You can open a ticket in jira, that will remind us of the issue, if you want to accelerate its resolution
making a pull request of yours with fix and test will certainly help

Hi list,
I am running GeoServer 2.6.2 and was unable to add a new layer from a PostGIS datastore in a workspace that was not a) the default workspace or b) an enabled workspace. So I could only publish layers from PostGIS datastores in either the default workspace or an enabled workspace.
When trying to add a new layer from a PostGIS datastore, in the web interface, I receive an error upon calculation of the native bounding box:
20 Mar 16:18:49 ERROR [data.resource] - Error computing the geographic BBOX
java.io.IOException: Schema ‘http://monkey5:archsites’ does not exist.
When trying to publish the same layer through the REST interface I receive the same error.
In GeoServer 2.5.5 I could not reproduce this behaviour, here it was no problem to publish a layer from a PostGIS datastore to datastore that was not enabled.
I figured to work around the problem by first enabling the workspace before publishing, but this does not seem possible through the REST interface (the web interface is not an option for me).
Any ideas or solutions for either the 1) bug or 2) workaround are very welcome.
Thanks!
Kind regards,
–
