[Geoserver-users] Unable to download GeoServer 2.15.2 Windows Installer

Hi,

when trying to download the Windows Installer of GeoServer 2.15.2 SourceForge ist displaying the error message

The “/GeoServer/2.15.2/ge…geoserver-2.15.2.exe” file could not be found or is not available. Please select another file.

It seems that the file hasn’t been uploaded. Could anyone please correct this.

We’re not currently making windows installers, sorry. We’ll try to update the pages to remove the link from the download page at sometime in the near future.

To clarify, it’s not that we’re unwilling, but we lost the build server that was used to automate Windows installer

preparation, and that the very important OSGeo cerficate on it (so no, we cannot have volunteers build the installers,
or else, they could, but they would not be signed and Windows would complain…).

A new one might get acquired, but timing is uncertain

Hi Andrea,

Can’t we just make an instruction on how Windows User can create their own installer for themselves (I understand you don’t want just any public user creating Windows installers for public use, but users might want to create these for private use).

I found an instruction (in the git documentation history, which explains it very nicely):

indeed those are the instructions that we used years ago, when releases were still done manually.
Back then we still had developers using Windows, and we were not releasing as often as now,
so it was still manageable, but not anymore.

If I had to guess, the steps are likely still working, but only one way to know for sure

Still works exactly the way the instruction explains – even the website of NSIS is correct!

Technically one of the things that is nice about NSIS is that it is available as a linux application, so you can create an unsigned installer on linux for use on a windows machine. Sadly will all the “trust” mechanisms in place we really need a windows machine to sign the result at the end of the day…

I understand that it’s no longer possible to publish the setup file from a GeoServer perspective.

However, for those who need the Windows installer, having the instruction to let the end user create there own setup file would be nice!

Technically one of the things that is nice about NSIS is that it is available as a linux application, so you can create an unsigned installer on linux for use on a windows machine. Sadly will all the “trust” mechanisms in place we really need a windows machine to sign the result at the end of the day…

Hi Ronald,

indeed those are the instructions that we used years ago, when releases were still done manually.

Back then we still had developers using Windows, and we were not releasing as often as now,

so it was still manageable, but not anymore.

If I had to guess, the steps are likely still working, but only one way to know for sure

To clarify, it’s not that we’re unwilling, but we lost the build server that was used to automate Windows installer

preparation, and that the very important OSGeo cerficate on it (so no, we cannot have volunteers build the installers,

or else, they could, but they would not be signed and Windows would complain…).

A new one might get acquired, but timing is uncertain

We have relied on the build server for so many years that the windows installer manual process isno longer in the dev guide,
but I’ve found an old copy in the version control, hopefully it still works, see here:

By the way, what you get with the installer is just a “toy installation”, it’s very good for local testing
and demos, but I would never use it for production purposes, install Tomcat, optimize its JVM, add Marlin,
and deploy GeoServer in it for proper production setup instead.

I already found the link to the old docs – thanks.

But from your point of view, there’s no longer need to add it again to the live documentation…?

If so, then I’ll add it to our own documentation, as we use GeoServer (in production) on a Windows machine only for serving WFS, with IIS as a gateway to foreward (SSL) requests to Geoserver (for which we did not setup SSL).

This works just fine for us based on the default settings supplied by the Windows Setup (running it as a Windows 32-bit service).

Note: this is not a public webservice, so the loads are not very high…

Technically one of the things that is nice about NSIS is that it is available as a linux application, so you can create an unsigned installer on linux for use on a windows machine. Sadly will all the “trust” mechanisms in place we really need a windows machine to sign the result at the end of the day…

But from your point of view, there’s no longer need to add it again to the live documentation…?

It could be added if you want, make a pull request.

If so, then I’ll add it to our own documentation, as we use GeoServer (in production) on a Windows machine only for serving WFS, with IIS as a gateway to foreward (SSL) requests to Geoserver (for which we did not setup SSL).

This works just fine for us based on the default settings supplied by the Windows Setup (running it as a Windows 32-bit service).

Note: this is not a public webservice, so the loads are not very high…

Oh dear, yes, if you can live with 32bit addressing space only, load is indeed quite light

Hi Andrea,

I was thinking about where to add this instruction about creating the Windows installer.

Adding it to the ‘release’ section in the dev-manual is not a realy good place as this is not (no longer) a part of the release progress.

However, adding it to the USER manual is also a bit ‘strange’ – surely for non-tech users.

So I was thinking about a new section somewhere inside the DEV manual, to which can be pointed from the USER manual page of the Windows installer.

If you’re OK with this idea, l’ll try to make a suggestion/PULL how and where exactly…

I’ve made the modifications to the documentation (‘developer’ en ‘user’)

Added instruction to build the setup
Made a notification in the top-level (index) of the developer guide
Added a ‘warning’ in the ‘Windows Installer’ section of the ‘user’ guide

However, I don’t know how I can test whether the links are correctly working.
