Yes, these were steps specified in the instructions in loading the tiger data. It is really strange. If I just try to load one layer in the map viewer application without anything special nothing displays. For example the poly_landmarks. I’m using the latest postgres 8.4.2 db and latest version of postgis and have built my db based on the instructions provided for loading the tiger data.

Yes, the GeoServer demo you see at sigma.openplans.org is backed by a
postgis database containing tiger data for the entire U.S. There are
issues with computing bounding boxes with large datasets in GeoServer
but I would not think a single state would be too bad. Do you have
indexes built for all your tables. And have you vacuum analyzed them?
