[Geoserver-users] Unable to set startup-sql for Oracle NG datastore

Using geoserver 2.7.2…I need to execute some SQL on oracle connections obtained by geoserver. If I have the Session Startup SQL set then geoserver immediately shows an error that it can’t connect to the db.

Even the simplest SQL will reproduce the failure. My test SQL reads…

select sysdate from dual

If I save the settings like this in spite of the error then the same problem happens during geoserver startup and my data store is disabled.

Any thoughts on how I could work around this?

Hi Walter,
I checked the code, in that case we have the native Oracle connection twice wrapped,
first in the lifecycle wrapper, and then in the connection pool one, but the code
only attempts one level of unwrapping.

One year ago we changed the unwrapping logic to avoid the logs being flooded with
messages, I guess that made the code regress (the old version was not exactly
trying to do multiple unwrap levels either, it must have worked by accident).

Can you open a bug report?
Also, if you can code in Java and want to speed up the resolution of this
issue, you should be looking at this class/method and make a pull request containing
a fix, and a test that avoids future regressions:

The test should probably be added in this class (and/or its superclass) by making it read some features with geometries:

Thanks for the response. I’d be delighted to open a bug report. I’m new to geoserver. Can you point me in the right direction for doing that?

I definitely want to get more involved with geoserver and do what I can to improve a very valuable product. I’m a good java developer but I have no history with maven (I’ve used ant). I’m not up to speed on getting and building the code but definitely want to go there! I’ve been distracted by trying to hit near term functional goals. So I won’t hit the ground running with this even though the coding sounds reasonably straightforward. Hopefully Monday I can return to the get/build thing and see what I can do.

Hi Walter,

I checked the code, in that case we have the native Oracle connection twice wrapped,

first in the lifecycle wrapper, and then in the connection pool one, but the code

only attempts one level of unwrapping.

One year ago we changed the unwrapping logic to avoid the logs being flooded with

messages, I guess that made the code regress (the old version was not exactly

trying to do multiple unwrap levels either, it must have worked by accident).

Can you open a bug report?

Also, if you can code in Java and want to speed up the resolution of this

issue, you should be looking at this class/method and make a pull request containing

a fix, and a test that avoids future regressions:

The test should probably be added in this class (and/or its superclass) by making it read some features with geometries:

I definitely want to get more involved with geoserver and do what I can to improve a very valuable product. I’m a good java developer but I have no history with maven (I’ve used ant). I’m not up to speed on getting and building the code but definitely want to go there! I’ve been distracted by trying to hit near term functional goals. So I won’t hit the ground running with this even though the coding sounds reasonably straightforward. Hopefully Monday I can return to the get/build thing and see what I can do.
