Hi Billy,
yes, I believe that’s feasible but needs some attention, in particular, you want to disallow
massive data extractions by setting some WFS download limit, in particular,
the maximum number of features:
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/webadmin/services/WFS.html
The other issue, which is unfortunately a general one, is that WFS basically allows any type
of filter to be issued against the data. Like, maybe you have a spatia index and if people
use a bbox filter it will be very fast, but then someone comes and will try to filter parcels
by county name (making up an example field) which is not indexed, and that query
will keep you database busy for a long time.
In GeoServer we cannot limit requests by query type, but it is possible to add some limits
by programming, or even think about developing a generic query checker module that
given certain filter matching rules, decides if the GetFeature request can pass, or should
be denied.
Cheers
Andrea

Hi there,
First time listener, first time caller
I’m reaching out to this list because I’m researching the feasibility of using Geoserver to help distribute parcel data. My company has about 105 million parcels in a standardized database. Currently we sell in bulk and via subscription services but would like to add additional options for sharing our data. The current system is set up on MapDotNet which does not support WFS. I’m trying to figure out if GeoServer would allow us to keep the current system while loading all the parcels in GeoServer to create a WFS that we can distribute for those that want to stream parcel data into their own applications without acquiring the physical data. Does this make sense and are there any potential issues loading this much data?
Thank you for your time!
