Dear All, Just trying to install geoserver on Fedora Core 4 running Tomcat 5.
I have other application running fine under Tomcat but when I try to
deploy the war using the Tomcat Web Application Manager I get:
FAIL - Encountered exception java.io.IOException:
java.net.MalformedURLException: Absolute URL required with null
context
Can anyone help?
Many thanks,
Dan
What version of Java and GeoServer are you running?
Sure it's Sun's java?

Yes, gcj is not sufficient.
For GeoServer 1.6.5 you need Sun JDK 1.4.2 , but newer versions will give you better performance.
Please look for Fedora 4 guides, here is one: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc4.html . However, make sure you get the JDK, not the JRE.

ps. please keep conversation on list.

Hi I'm using the latest stable ver of geoserver (1.6.5)
Java -version says:
java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.0.0 20050519 (Red Hat 4.0.0-8)
I've got v. little java experience, so have I got to change the version
of java?
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,
I don't think i have ever seen this error before. If you could provide a bit more info it would be helpful in diagnosing the issue.
1. Which version of GeoServer are you running?
2. Which version of Java are you running?
3. Is there a full stack trace available in the log?
4. Does the application start, and then you get this error? Or does it happen during application startup?
Thanks,
-Justin
