They should all be backwards compatible. There are plenty of things in the standard that did not make sense like language restricted to 2D. Some semantics were changed to allow sensible behaviour for features with both 2D and 3D properties (what CRS do you use?). And there are things that are just plain wrong in the standard where it disagrees with its schemas. The changes are detailed in the text of the new standard. You can see the CRs on the change request page.
This is a corrigendum that should make the standard better without breaking anything.
The upcoming 2.X makes larger changes. The community should expect to get a nice presentation from Peter Vretanos when it is all done.
