[Geoserver-users] WFS T Update Works only one time

I have been attempting a WFS update transaction on the attached shapefile of
china(extractable zip). http://www.nabble.com/file/p11501841/ch.exe ch.exe
. Generally after a fresh install of the data store/feature type and a
restart of my machine I can get the update transaction to work ONE time.
Below is the transaction I am trying to use. Basically I want to update the
color map code where the population is greater than a certain number. I
have been testing with geoserver's sample request demo. After this works
the first time, I get a blank white screen from here on out. I am using
version 1.5.1 of geoserver. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be
a bad shapefile?

<wfs:Transaction service="WFS" version="1.0.0"

Hi,

Can you include the error you get the second time you try the update. I am not sure I can try the shapefile as I am not running on linux. Any chance you can throw it in a zip file?

Hi, I am running windows also, but here is a zipped up version. Also I do
not get any exceptions, just a message saying that the stream was abruptly
closed by the client. Here is the file:

So I just tried this out and it works for me... This could possibly be related to bug that Andrea recently fixed with extended character sets and shapefiles... Would you be able to try the latest nightly build from 1.5.x and see if the problem persists. You can grab it here:

I tried the nightly build and ended up with the same problem. Below is the
last thing I see in the console after the page stops loading, returning no
response. No exceptions are thrown either. Is it possible that I could be
installing this shape file incorrectly? I used the tutorial on geoserver's
website as a guide and I set the SRS to 4326 during the feature set install.
I place the shape file in the data_dir/data/china/ directory. The
predefined requests work great in the sample requests demo. Is there some
way I can see what's going on in the background with this? Also I am using
JDK 1.6.

Here is the console on my first attempt to perform the transaction, which has
been returning a parse exception at column 1, line 1, even though you said
the same transaction works for you. The second attempt at clicking the
submit button returns no response.

Here is what I see in the response box the first time I submit the
transaction:

XML Parsing Error: no element found

The second time, the response box is empty. Here is what I see in the

Hmmm... jdk should not make a difference but you never know... I am using jdk 1.4. I wonder if it could be a platform thing as I am running on linux.

Sure will do it tomorrow (my work day is gone already).

Um, it should be noted that we really don't recommend actually doing transactions in any kind of production environment against shapefiles. We mostly include it as a proof of concept, but if you're actually doing anything more then testing it you want to rely on the transaction capabilities of a database, not some file on your system. We have no plans to support full transactions against shapefiles, though we may look in to automatically inserting shapefiles in to a java database like H2, which would be transparent to the user.

best regards,

Chris

I agree. I saw this recommendation on the website. However I am just
testing concept for now. I need to make sure this will not be an issue when
I move over to postgres.

Thanks - Dan

capabilities of a database, not some file on your system. We have no
plans to support full transactions against shapefiles, though we may
look in to automatically inserting shapefiles in to a java database like
H2, which would be transparent to the user.

the same transaction works for you. The second attempt at clicking the

Here is what I see in the response box the first time I submit the
transaction:

XML Parsing Error: no element found

The second time, the response box is empty. Here is what I see in the

I agree. I saw this recommendation on the website. However I am just
testing concept for now. I need to make sure this will not be an issue when
I move over to postgres.

Well, we do pass the WFS 1.0 cite tests, so I'd say we're pretty much
covered. Then again, importing a shapefile into postgis and testing
is a matter of minutes, worth a try (and I'll be curious about the results).

Cheers

Works like a charm with Postgres. I'll stick with this then. Thanks, Dan.
