Hi!
First at all sorry for my English.
I`d like to make an interaktiv Mapservers with Open Source. So I want to know which middleware I shoud use: the UMN-Mapserver or the Geoserver? The dates which I use are in an informixdatabase at ArcSDE access.
What are the advantages of Geoserver compared with UMN-Mapserver?
Thanks for helping me
Albert

The advantages I generally say of GeoServer vs. MapServer are easier to configure and 'standard by default', that is there's no additional configuration to match open standards. GeoServer has standards at it's core, while MapServer has added them on to a strong core engine. GeoServer has better WFS support, and offers WFS-T, so that you can modify your backend data through standard interfaces.
As for the advantages of MapServer, it's faster for WMS, and has more depth around WMS. It also has 'mapscript', which has bindings in a variety of scripting languages, to make use of the engine.
My general advice is that if you're just serving images (not the raw data that WFS lets you do), and you've already taken the plunge with learning MapServer configuration, then stick with it. If you're just getting started GeoServer + MapBuilder (or OpenLayers soon) will get you running more quickly.
best regards,
Chris
