Dear GeoServants,
I would like to provide access to cached map tiles and have been experimenting between GeoServer’s three GeoWebCache web services: WMS-C, TMS, and WMTS. In my testing it appears that only WMS-C (tiled=true) will allow and dynamically generate access to map tiles that have not been previously cached already. In the latter two cases (TMS, WMTS), if I haven’t previously generated a particular map tile they are returned blank. Is that the intended behavior and is there a way to tell TMS and WMTS to provide and generate map tiles when requested that GWC has not already stored? In some cases, it is unrealistic for me to pre-generate all possible map zooms and spatial coverage for a dataset but I would like them accessible to users ad hoc while still taking advantage of the already cached tiles. Thanks for your thoughts on this topic.

Hi John,
That’s definitely not how it’s meant to work. TMS and WMTS should certainly generate any tiles that are not pre-cached. Someone else may have encountered this before, but I wonder if it’s the integration with GWC.
One of these two pages may help:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/webadmin/tilecache/defaults.html
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/geowebcache/using.html#direct-integration-with-geoserver-wms
It may also be worth confirming that the things you’re requesting via WMS-C are the same as the things you’re requesting via TMS/WMTS? (as in, image format, style, etc).
Cheers,
Jonathan
