I have been trying to set up https support for geoserver and have it working for tomcat but in geoserver, the tutorial in the docs online seem to be either not referencing prerequisite setup or aren’t correct.
First issue is with step 8. There is no role “ROLE_ADMINISTRATOR” or “ROLE_GROUP_ADMIN”. There is only “ADMIN” and “GROUP_ADMIN”. Fine, they’re similar to the two defined in the docs so I set it to “ADMIN”.
Second issue (numbering doesn’t show two digits by the way) is in step 16. Under the “Filter Chains” section, there is no Request Type or dropdown setting. There isn’t even a filter chain called “Web UI”.
How is this supposed to work? Is the documentation correct and I missed some geoserver setup somewhere? Thanks for any help.
Security is a bit of a choose your own adventure in terms of defining roles and users. You are intended to define roles that match your organisation’s structure after all.
The role administrator and role group admin can be consider the two levels of access available for use of the geoserver administration web application. You can nominate any of your roles to have these powers as appropriate.
So I may make a “team_lead” group and assign it “group_admin”. That way a user given team_lead status would have the ability to login to just the security section of GeoServer. They would not be able to publish new data, but they would be able to manage their team members.

Yes, you can safely use ADMIN and GROUP_ADMIN.

The UI has changed a bit, you don’t have a dropdown anymore, replaced by a table. The old “Web UI” dropdown choice is now the “web” table row, click on the link to configure it.
