[Geoserver-users] YNT: Re: Geoserver Illegal Usage

You can use your modified code however you want. Modifying the
appearance of website is standard practice for many orgs and in no way
violates this license.

If you sell or give away the code, in code or compiled form, it must be
under the same license as the original Geoserver code. But sure you
could change the name if you wanted. I'm not sure what you mean by get
an OGC certification. If you actually changed the code and name of the
product you would probably need to apply for your own certification. But
nothing would prevent you from lying about it, accept local consumer
protection laws.

Thanks,
Alex

Depends on the country.

But specifically in this case, you are allowed to use GPL code however
you like. Usage is not governed by the license. There is no requirement
that you tell people what software your website is running.

The license only applies when you edit the source code and distribute
the new version to others. In this case that would be if the company was
making product and giving/selling that product to others, those others
would be entitled to receive all the code under GPL.

Thanks,
Alex

Subject: Geoserver Illegal Usage

Hi,
There is a a company using Geoserver, but they somehow are able to cover
that they use Geoserver appearently. However, when i ask for
GetCapabilities function for their wms, an xml file is downloaded then, i
can see the web server behind the app is geoserver because it is written in
the xml. They declare that Web server is their own GIS Server. Is it legal
to use geoserver by developping some code and interface and declare that
it's our own Web server.? Any punishment or something else?
