[Geoserver-users] Zoom

After upgrading from 2.5.3 to 2.8.2, we experienced a significant decrease in performance when increasing the zoom level to the point of becoming unresponsive (zooming in tighter around the 0-4 zoom level).

The issue also occurred when using any Geoserver version 2.6.x and up and did not occur with any Geoserver version 2.5.x.

We are using floating point numbers for RasterSymbolizer for the colormap.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi,
there should be some fixes for slowdowns caused by heavy raster oversampling in 2.8.4, try it out.

Cheers
Andrea

Hey Andrea,

I played around with 2.8.4 as well, but also noticed the same issue of the performance hit in terms of response time where upon zooming in to the max zoom level, the layers had difficulty rendering and couldn’t completely finish rendering.

I did notice though that in 2.8.4 the memory usage was much more constant and not approaching the max allocated which I believe was part of the problem with the prior versions of 2.6 and up and that seemed to help a bit, but didn’t solve it.

Thanks again,

Matt

I get that when I try to zoom out (not in) on a really crowded layer, but it has nothing to do with geoserver versions.

May I suggest you try a vanilla style on your layer and see if the issue continues?

It might be that something in the SLD is handled differently on your new geoserver version.

Also 2.9.0 and 2.8.4 are already out, you may want to try those in case you are upgrading to the latest version.

Best,
--Daniel

Hi Matthew,
the ticket I was referring to is this one: https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOT-5391

The ticket links to https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-7464 which was not closed,
Simone says there is still some work to do, but I do not have specifics on it.

You might want to comment on that ticket and attach a way to reproduce the slowdown (data, style, request)

I tested this and it seems like turning off the advanced projection handling helped increase the performance slightly, however, some of the requests still took way too long when zoomed in tightly resulting in timeout after 60 seconds.

I tested these settings in both 2.8.2 and 2.8.4.

I’m not sure if its relevant, but the area that I’m zooming in on isn’t near the dateline, poles, or the equator.

Thanks,

Matt

Dear Matt,
FYI https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-7464 has been fixed on
master and now we are backporting to the other versions.

It would be great if you can grab a master nightly build and give it a
try to let us know how it goes.
