The GEO Secretariat is seeking a contractor for short-term (6 months) support for its work in the Societal Benefit Area of Biodiversity and Ecosystems, to be based at GEO Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland
Deadline: November 1, 2007.
The Secretariat will be developing a Biodiversity and Ecosystem Strategy in conjunction with the
GEO Member Countries and Participating Organizations. The strategy will build on work
conducted in pursuance of the 2007-2009 GEO Work Plan.
Specifically, the following activities are planned for the contractor to support the Secretariat in the
preparation of the strategy:
- Coordinate the assessment of current international, regional, national and nongovernmental
activities that are being undertaken to produce the indicators for the
Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 Biodiversity Targets. - Support development of the GEO Biodiversity Observation Network strategic documents.
- Assist in preparations for the GEO Plenary and Ministerial Summit and related biodiversity
and ecosystems exhibits and materials. - Report on the status and recommend model information systems and portals to the GEO
Secretariat. - Provide support to Biodiversity and Ecosystem workshops (tasks) that will aim at engaging
and building the capacity of stakeholders at the local, national and regional levels.
Qualifications and attributes: - A good understanding of Earth observation and Earth sciences;
- An understanding of GEO Biodiversity and Ecosystems objectives;
- Demonstrated ability in quantitative and qualitative analysis;
- Experience with national and international biodiversity and conservation NGOs;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with fluency in English;
- Computer literate with, as a minimum, proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
Access, PowerPoint) or equivalent Open Source software; and - Knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystems data, databases and information systems.
