r.stats works fine and allows netCDF file creation within GMT, thanks folks.

stepping back a moment and looking at this, 'r.stats -1x' is NOT
AT ALL INTUITIVE...
Perhaps we need an optional flag added to r.out.ascii or maybe a shell
script called r.out.xyz (which just calls r.stats -1x). Any takers?
