Graphics driver [mlp] is already running ** but it's not **

Hi:
  When I try to start a monitor called "mlp", grass tells me that this
monitor is already running.
  I cleaned the $GISBASE/locks directory and still it's giving the same
message. What other directory should I look at ? The process is definitely
not running, I checked using "ps" command.
