Graphics monitor color problems

Dear Grass Users,

I have recently compiled the GRASS4.1 release on my GATEWAY2000 P5-150 at
school and my Micron P-133 at home. I
am running the most recent release of Redhat LINUX on both machines. The
compilation process went fairly smooth; however, when I go to open a
graphics monitor, say x0, I receive the following message:

Graphics driver [x0] started
Color: can't set color 0
Color: can't set color 0

The graphics monitor does open; however, I receive a segmentation fault
when I attempt to display a raster image. The video cards for the
respective machines are a Matrox MGA 2MB PCI video card and a Diamond
Stealth 64 Video VRAM 2MB card.

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
My e-mail address at school is: beskahil@ouray.cudenver.edu

and at home: BESkahill@msn.com

Thank you.

Brian,
The GRASS Xdriver only works with 256 color displays. Make sure that your
display mode is set to 8bpp for 256 colors. That should fix it (I'm
running GRASS under RedHat4.0 on a Cyrix 6x86 P166+ and it _screams_. The
video display, Jaton Video-58P with et6000 chip and 4meg MDRAM, is the
fastest I've seen. Good luck!

Is the requirement for 256 color displays hard wired? Can I recompile it
for other resolutions? Would this be not an advantage?

I am planning to build a system, one major purpose for which is to run
GRASS.

The Xdriver is hardwired for 256-color displays (you gotta remember the
age of some of this code - which isn't necessarily a bad thing!).
However, there is source code floating around (on the GRASS ftp site??)
for a modified Xdriver that will work on 24-bit displays, though still
only showing 256 colors. We have used this extensively with 24-bit X
emulation software (eXceedNT) and Sun 24-bit displays. If you can't
locate it, drop me a note.
