[GRASS-dev] coastline for the grass usermap

I notice the coastline for the GDF Hannover GRASS users' map is quite
crude when you zoom in to city scale. The raster backdrop looks great.
(I'm not sure who maintains that.)

Here is a better worldwide vector coastline, licensed as GPL:
  http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/shorelines/data/gshhs/version1.5/

It would be nice to use it!

I have maintained this app for some time, but currently
I have no access to the server anymore so I cannot apply your suggested
dataset. Do you know a WMS-Server where this data is made available to
the public? This would reduce the ammount of work which needs to be
done to preprocess.

It would be nice to use it!

I leave it this to the current maintainers at GDF for decision.

Best

Martin Spott is working on this for OSGeo on a telascience.org machine.
The OSGeo Wiki contains details.

It would be nice to use it!

Looks like that I am involved
Currently no time, but ping me if nothing happens.

BTW: here is the link:

I added some GSHHS comments to:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Geodata_processing_at_telascience.org#Data:_GSHHS_World_Costline_Vector_Data

including a link to openstreetmap.org's wiki, which claims to link to
some even better landsat+algorithm derived coastline data (PGS, EVS
Islands).

Stephan- as for WMS servers hosting GSHHS data, I don't know, but
a web search for GSHHS+WMS brings back 600+ hits so I recon that
chances on finding one are fairly good.

Once you have a viable solution to be integrated into our
GRASS map server, I can implement it. But I would appreciate
a sort of receipe to a solution which won't slow down the
server.
