Compiles fine here, on Debian unstable x86, using very recent proj/gdal/etc.
initial use seems to be fine, QGIS runs, etc.

Minor complaint:
r.external menu entry missing in tcltk, present in wxpython as Raster->Develop raster map->Link to GDAL. IMHO this wonderful module deserves a menu entry also in tcltk

If there are no objections, I would like to tag RC1 tomorrow (23 dec 2008).
The feedback so far was positive for the various Linux distros,
unclear for Windows (one bug fixed since then) and positive for MacOSX,
too.
