It true, grassbook needs updating.

On page 133, on about 'Buffering of raster features' clearly uses r.cats
over r.category

for grass 6 there is a link to the old name so that r.cats still works as
expected from the command line or from scripts. The GRASS book is written
for GRASS 6.

for grass 7 backwards compatibility is guaranteed not to be preserved, so
the backwards-compatibility name link is dropped and prior documentation
is not compatible.
