The autorendering mode can't be disabled for the current session, once
enabled. Is that as expected and I really have to restart wxGUI for this
change to work?

Do you mean in GUI preferences? Anyway enabling/disabling auto-rendering
mode for each opened map display works for me...

No, "auto-rendering" option in GUI preferences serves as default value for
each newly open map display. Checkbox in the map display statusbar
enables/disables auto-rendering only in the current map display.
