I've been testing d.grid today. I must say it got much much better 
However, there are some other customizations that IMHO could be useful:
- labels appear far away from the border when user chooses to not draw the
border. They would look better if they were touching the border when the
option "don't draw border" is activated.
- possibility to choose if labels are to be drawn down and right (as it is
now) or up and left (at least). Maybe also the other combinations could be
useful.
- possibility to rotate text of labels (i.e.: make it horizontal when it
is vertical and vice-versa).
