#644: increase visibility of GUI status bar

Some menus fold down very long and cover the status bar in the layer
manager.
Text in the status bar isn't readable anymore.

Please find a way to retain the visibility of the status bar.

Probably cannot be avoided with the current GUI layout. Better chance with
