[GRASS-dev] Let's talk about releases - 7.8.3, 7.10, 8.0

Dear users and devs,

I though it would be a good idea to video meet next week and talk about what would be the best way of releasing GRASS GIS in the future. As always, both contributors and users are invited to share ideas and opinions.

I’m thinking to meet for one hour. Here is a Doodle poll for the date and times:

https://doodle.com/poll/bd3g9nfzurtdeg6i
(Times should show in your local time and are between 17:00-22:00 UTC.)

If this works, and based on the website video discussion it seems it does, we could meet in semi-regular fashion in the future.

Best,

Vaclav

PS: If you are answering to this email, I cross posted it to both user and dev mailing lists, so you may want to take care to reply to just one mailing list.

Dear all,

I closed the poll and picked the most . We will meet 18:00 UTC using Jitsi. I will post a link to the meeting to this thread (grass-dev and grass-user) right before the meeting.

+1 on your scenario 2, with only one possible change: looking at the past, I'm not sure it is realistic to wait until March for the x.0.1 release. Probably January is more realistic. This would then mean May and September for x.0.2 and x.0.3.

thanks Vaclav for thorough summarizing! I took liberty to reorder
scenario 3 based on dates. Small note about scenario 2. I think that
at least one 7.8.x should be released after 8.0.0. So

7.8.4 Sep 2020
8.0.0 Nov 2020 some time after 7.8.4 and before this: 80 branch forked
from master
7.8.5 Jan 2021 last release == EOL for 7.8 series
8.0.1 Mar 2021

Are we planning to do motion at PSC? Ma

Vaclav,

What would be the agenda? Will you and the other devs present options while
every participant contributes they opinion? What are the issues with the
current way of releasing GRASS upgrades? Are you looking for solutions to
those issues or a choice among a few solutions?

Best regards,

There was couple related discussions in the past here and there (see below), so it’s time to discuss this properly.

thanks for links. We miss a clear plan, probably less strict than QGIS
[1], but currently we have no long-term roadmap. I have created a
draft page, please extend, add new suggestions [2]

Martin et al.:

I'm not a developer but based on my experiences with a range of sofware I
support the idea of a coarse-grained schedule. Too much detail can add
pressure that might allow bugs to filter through. And, a schedule does add
structure that benefits all of us, developers and users.

Stay well,

Rich

Yes, great initiative!

I have taken liberty to add a "remarks" page with EOL (end of life)
and added the links to the respective roadmap pages (which will move
to gitHub in the long run).

7.8 will be EOL in 7 months ?? or is that referring only to the minor version 7.8.5?

As stated on the page, it’s just a proposal (by me, nothing official).
Please join the discussion of you can or feel free to suggest a modified plan on the trac page. That would be great.

We shall consider carefully pros and cons, along with available resources.
