I had time to do another quick test on v.thematic.area.
It works fine if you manually put in the break (i.e., as numbers separated by commas).
However, it colors all areas by the second color in the list if you try to embed a v.class command into the breaks= argument.
I’m doing this on a Mac OS X 10.4.11, using X11.
