[GRASS-dev] New splash screen for GRASS GIS 7?

Thanks Vincent. This is conceptually along the lines I was thinking, but better thought out and presented by you.

The image on the splash screen should follow the same logic: display the logo and tag line, use the color green, and visually reinforce the message in the tag line.

So far, the tag lines proposed have all included the concepts of GIS or digital mapping (“geospatial technology”) and universality (“world", “everyone").

Hi,
I packed most of the graphical tests I did last week on a wiki page. I
tried to initiate a place (very rough yet) where we can further set up
things concerning graphical identity. Hope this helps.

Good initiative… For a decision to be taken (if there are enough quality proposals for the tagline, logo and the splash screen), would it be an idea to invite GRASS users to vote (as was already proposed before - so perhaps something is already in place)? A simple/easy way could be a poll on the GRASS GIS Google+ page, and people could be invited via the email list. Anyway, just though it could be nice to get ‘the user community’ to pick from a selection.

Voting is fine. However, only 1 of the images fits the informational logic I suggested. People might first want to disagree with this logic or propose other images that fit it before we vote.

Just a word of caution: Not long ago (2011 (http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-developer/2011-August/015791.html) or 2013 (http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-developer/2013-May/026008.html)) the QGIS-project had a (long) logo discussion too.

Quite some resources were used (in terms of developer- and user-time) on creating logo proposals and polls (a kind of logo-contest in several rounds) as well as discussing proposals in several threads. At the end – if I am not mistaken – the project ended up with using more or less the old logo…

For QGIS is it more difficult as they change their splash screen every year or so, with each major release.

GRASS only does it once every decade

OK,

Stephan, I hear your advice. Yes, eventhough it may look a trivial or
childish task, achieving a mastered output actually takes time and
requires a minimum of care. So, trying to satisfy everyone's
taste/preference/fundamental point of view/or whatever/ will probably be
challenging...
When someone submits a piece of code, the coding style is not much
discussed, but the community is allowed to change it if definitely
unsatisfied.

We could try to go ahead with one proposal (say, one that satisfies at
least a bunch of most commited people), and adapt it at the next release
(or in 10 years  ?

As Moritz mentions in his revision, there is a problem with a font
family (Fontin). I am looking for an substitute.

Yours,
Vincent

Thanks for the warning. I agree that we should not spend much resources on
it but we should spend some. It is impotent to note the difference to QGIS
2.0 logo change. We are not changing the logo but just the design of splash
and startup screen (and perhaps layer manager?). These are things which can
change anytime but before release it is a good time to change it and in
fact we are not changing graphical things often, so it is worth to think
this through.

Anyway, I don't think that we need to discuss Vincent's cleaned version of
the logo (it's just a technical change).

For the splash screen we need something nice but I think it should be
something simple too because the time you actually see splash is short. For
this reason I consider the world with grass all over as unnecessary
complicated.

The startup screen is more important I think but on the other hand, there
should be just something very simple. Simple think will not obsolete and
will not get old so fast. To the suggestions at the wiki, if I remember
correctly we can have both, transparent for light and white for dark, the
only question is how to decide (in Python) that it is dark (e.g., compare
brightness of system text and background). So we can try that and change it
later if it does not work.

Overall, I like all Vincent's suggestions at
http://grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Identity and once Vincent feels confident
(and technical issues such as font are solved) I would go ahead and vote
(if it is even necessary to vote, I don't know).

Thanks Vincent and others, it looks great so far!
Vaclav

Cheers

Hi Vaclav,

am I right that you have already an updated welcome screen on your own machine? Since changing the graphics therein is rather easy would you mind to share a diff?

I would also be happy to see Markus M’s suggestion implemented as alternative startup.

Both could be then selected via flag as usual.

Thanks
Markus

Hi Markus,

I posted two different startup screens so far, one with new logo and one
with a new layout (I posted screenshot for both, but diff just for the
later). I'm not sure what you want to do and which one do want. I would
like to commit the new layout to trunk, should I do that now?
