I was using d.grid and somehow the text display has become linked to the grid display. If you turn the grid display off (-n) the text disappears too. The text is supposed to be controlled independently with the -t flag so that you can have border with text and no grid or grid with text and no border, etc.
Also, I like the new draw ‘+’ option.
