Well, but how do yo mask vectors?

I am not sure I understand. Do you want the raster map placed over top of
a vector area? Or vector area over the top but semi-transparent? or..?

Also, I try to understand your raster overlay method- can the background
raster retain its own color map or will it have to be monochrome? (with a
grey, blue, ... tinge)
