just for the curiosity, do we need r.buffer2 (raster/r.buffer) in
GRASS7? There is r.buffer (scripts/r.buffer).

r.buffer2 is quite a bit quicker, particularly for the geodesic case,
but requires that you can fit the entire map in memory.
