why is the creation of new vectors in v.categories, v.dissolve, and
similar commands needed? Couldn't it be an option, so one could
overwrite the original vector? I imagine it shouldn't be difficult to
realize it...
Probably not (just need to create a temporary file which you copy over the original file at the end, but it represents a higher risk of losing data. So, IMHO, this is not a question of programming, but a more general question of program philosophy...
