[GRASS-dev] ReadMe.rtf

Hi,

what is the purpose of macosx/pkg/resources/ReadMe.rtf? I just removed note about xganim from it but I really don’t know if it should be replaced by g.gui.animation or just removed.

I’m not sure about the purpose of this file. The last change (not counting my) was 6 years ago (in GRASS 7), so I would say that it is outdated. There is a lot of information about X11 and Tcl/Tk and then some info about GPS, R and other things.

The only unique information there are the notes about running Mac OS X app. But this might be part of some standard manual page.

Is this file used for something, so we should update it and decide what information should be there, or can we just remove it?

Thanks for info,
Vaclav

It's purpose is to have all info about compiling GRASS on OS X - there is a lot needed on OS X that is not covered by a simple Linux configure-compile.

I haven't updated it in a while because it all still mostly applies, and I've been too lazy to make minor changes for new systems (and my interest is waning). Also, it should probably be moved to the wiki page for compiling on OS X - easier for others to update and add custsom build info.

Sure makes sense for macosx/ReadMe.rtf, but I was actually asking about

macosx/pkg/resources/ReadMe.rtf.

+1 for moving to wiki (GRASS wiki, wikimedia). There are interactions for

linux distos (not sure about MS Windows, maybe GRASS Trac wiki?).

Brain just saw the Readme part and assumed the wrong one.

This one is for packaging, when you build an installer package with make bindist. It will be installed in /Users/Shared. It's an intro to get an end user started after installing a binary distribution. From there they can get to the GRASS site for documentation, mailing list help and wiki.

Yes, lots of outdated stuff there, even the GRASS site link is old. And it should probably not have my contact info.

All generalizations are dangerous, even this one.

Yes that's true, but anyway I think that we should make the file general

enough, so that it does not have to be updated much. The other possibility
is to generate the file from some manual page with mac specific info but
this would require to have some html2rtf which we currently don't have.

If general, non detailed file is what we want, I will change it once I will
get some inspiration and time but if you or somebody else has some idea,
feel free to rewrite the file.

Thanks for explanation, William.

PS: What is the safe way of editing RTF file (which looks OK on Mac)?
LibreOffice?
