[GRASS-dev] what is PIL used for?

PIL has not been updated in quite awhile (2009) and now has a possible replacement fork in PILLOW (https://pillow.readthedocs.io/en/5.2.x/)

It is incompatible with wxPython above 4.0.0.

What is it used for in GRASS? Should we consider switching to PILLOW?

Yes, Pillow is used already for a while on ubuntu.
