Who is CAST.....
The Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies was established at the
University of Arkansas in September of 1991. The Center is an
element of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
but has a campus-wide role with the active involvement of the
Fulbright College, the College of Agriculture, Life and Human
Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Business
Administration, and the School of Architecture.
In addition to its professional education emphasis, CAST is
actively involved in research, undergraduate and graduate
education, spatial data distribution, technology transfer, digital
photogrammetry, remote sensing, and interoperability. Many of
CAST's research efforts involve new approaches to spatial data and
the development of new methodologies for analysis of these data,
providing products and information to a variety of audiences.
Cooperative programs developed by CAST are designed to bring
together the benefits of academic research and development, the
resources of state and federal agencies, and the private sector to
provide the state and region with effective spatial technologies,
trained practitioners, and low-cost digital data.
CAST staff....
Since GIS applications encompass a wide range of knowledge from
many fields of study, a conscious effort has been made to insure
that Center staff are not only proficient in GIS software, but also
represent a broad spectrum of disciplines. CAST has over thirty
full-time and part-time staff members with diverse backgrounds in
areas such as architecture, archaeology, agronomy, landscape
architecture, surveying, engineering, geology, computer science,
remote sensing, photo interpretation, historic preservation,
geography, forestry, wildlife biology, and the social sciences.
Equipment and facilities....
CAST occupies ten offices, five labs, and a library/reading room
area in more than 6,000 square feet of Ozark Hall on the University
of Arkansas campus. The Center's facilities include the Advanced
Applications and Interoperability Lab, the Mapping and GeoSciences
Computer Lab, the Rural America 2000 Lab, the Spatial Technologies
Research Lab, the Multipurpose Computer Lab, and other research and
administrative areas.
The Center is equipped with 26 UNIX and 25 NT high performance
workstations and two large multi-processor servers on a fiber-optic
network. The Center has more than 250 gigabytes of on-line disk
storage including optical and tape juke boxes and a full range of
tape drives and CD-Rom systems. There is a full complement of
peripherals including three single and dual-headed digitizers, two
E-size and one B size scanner, and a range of color output devices
including E- B- and A-sized ink jets, a D-sized electrostatic
plotter, two A/B-size dye sublimation printers, and numerous black
and white printers.
The Center maintains an on-line 12 channel GPS base-station and has
numerous portable GPS systems including systems with sub-meter
accuracy. The facilities are carpeted, climate controlled, and
equipped with high quality furnishings to provide researchers,
students, and visitors with a comfortable and efficient space, one
which is ideal for accomplishing outreach and training objectives.
All labs are fully accessible.
Where are classes held....
Classes are held in Ozark Hall on the University of Arkansas Campus
in Fayetteville, Arkansas. CAST's newly equipped labs and recently
remodeled classrooms provide an excellent learning environment.
Fayetteville's location at the heart of the USA and its natural
scenic beauty make it an ideal meeting place. Located in the Ozark
Mountains of Northwest Arkansas, Fayetteville can be reached by air
or highway. The area offers a variety of hotel accommodations, and
