As promised, the results of the query about GRASS on a PC platform.

There were confirmed sightings of GRASS running under Linux and
X-Windows on the PC's. The claim is that it was snappier than on some
other UNIX boxes.

There was also indication that GRASS has been run under SCO XENIX, and
very little on details were added.

As for DOS, I had one response that said it is functionally impossible
because of some of the multiprocessing that GRASS uses. I'll agree
with that -- for under a 16-bit system....

I am willing to attempt a port of GRASS for 386+ systems using the
djgpp 32-bit compilers, etc. The only current problem I have is that
I am out of disk space and having some hardware problems. But they
may be cleared up soon! If/when this occurs, I am game to give it a
go.. it would be very useful for our uses here at the Joint Education
Initiative. But like everyone -- time is going to be critical... so I
make no PROMISES!

Oh, for the concern about multiprocessing under DOS, the djgpp sort of
fixes this whole thing, it can do psuedo task-swapping (ala windows),
but I am curious to play and try to fire up some V86 code on the 386's
and see what might be do able.

But for the mean time -- looks like Linux is the answer.
Its a GREAT OS -- try it if you can. (Free too!)

Thank you very much for the numerous peopel who replied!

Cheers.
