Is it possible to use different (French) characters within
the tool d.text and d.legend.

I looked in the 4.0 source installed here and it looks like
some things may have changed since I last thought about fonts
(e.g., Hershey fonts). Can anyone provide information/pointer
to documentation regarding fonts and any ongoing development?
