Hi All,
I made a new vector with rectangles in GRASS 6.3.
I put centroids into all boundaries.

In QGIS the type of new layer is shown as line, non area

what v.info says?

Area is defined as a set of boundaries + one centroid inside. Probably
polylines defining areas in your map have feature type 'line'. Change
to 'boundary' e.g. using v.type module.
