For Europe, there is for example this dataset:
http://www.ecad.eu/download/ensembles/download.php#datafiles

For other continents, there might be similar ones (e.g. USA: PRISM)

Or you can use the global worldclim data set (http://worldclim.org), mentioned on the manual page or r.bioclim
