[GRASS-user] Error on start up - session manager - ubuntu 16.04

Dear list

When starting GRASS 7.2.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 I got this error message on start up:
“Debug: Failed to connect to session manager: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined”

Then searching the web for solutions I found this thread: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/SESSION-MANAGER-environment-variable-not-defined-td5181059.html

I tried “export SESSION_MANAGER=1” as suggested in the thread which resulted in a new error on start up:
“_IceTransOpen: Unable to Parse address 1 08:49:34 AM: Debug: Failed to connect to session manager: Could not open network socket”

At this point I decided that it was time I admitted that I don’t know what I’m doing!

Can anybody help me sort out this issue?

I have python 3.5.2 and python 2.7.12 installed. Only in python 2.7.12 does wx appear to be available and in version wx-3.0-gtk2.

When starting GRASS from the terminal I see the above mentioned error but the GRASS gui starts and I can open a location.

Best

Lars

Does it actually cause any problems? This happens on Ubuntu (not sure
why), but it should be harmless.

GRASS doesn't have official Python 3 support. There has just been
released wxPython 4.0 which has Python 3 support, but porting GRASS is
work in progress.

Hi Anna

Thank you for your feedback.

No, as far as I can tell, GRASS is working just fine, but I’ve only imported and display a single vector file.

If it is a harmless error message, I’ll just ignore it and move on.

Cheers,

Lars

... same thing on Fedora for example.

Setting $SESSION_MANAGER to something then leads to this warning:
_IceTransOpen: Unable to Parse address 1

However, it is a harmless warning.

The related wxwidgets bug ticket is
   http://trac.wxwidgets.org/ticket/16024
but received a "wontfix". In the ticket is some workaround (not sure
if we can use that).
