[GRASS-user] Examples of use of r.gwflow

Hello dear GRASS users community,

We’re interested in using the “Groundwater modeling” in GRASS GIS. Searching the net doesn’t give many actual results / examples. One article of 2005 (http://hidro.ufcg.edu.br/twiki/pub/Disciplinas/GeotecnologiaAplicada/Renato.pdf) uses an older version (r.gmtg that was based on MODFLOW). Has any of you experience / examples of the use of the actual module r.gwflow? We are looking for a way to model the groundwater recharge from small reservoirs in Mali.

Thanks in advance,
Huub

I saw that the "Diplomarbeit" of the r.gwflow author is online (PDF,
German language).

Furthermore I saw this AGU poster:

A related discussion with script snippets is here:

Hope this helps (maybe others can post more),

Yes, Markus, the AGU poster you pulled up is from my work with colleagues. Soeren Gebbert, the r.gwflow developed assisted a lot in that work.

Huub, r.gwflow is a really terrific module. trouble is, i’ve been trying to use it in the most complex environment perhaps - urban groundwater modeling in India where there is little data to calibrate, We are trying to improve that with groundwater depth measurements right now, which hopefully can be used to refine the r.gwflow model parameterization.

so i have nothing easy that you could use; but the help page is pretty good to start. setting boundary conditions is important. hopefully you have some groundwater field data to calibrate your model at least partially.

r.gmtg is different from r.gwflow- i dont think it is r.gmtg development is active any more.

my guess is that if the small reservoirs are anything like the check dams of south and southeast asia, the effects will be very local; so the model spatial structure may end up pretty fine and related boundary conditions will have to be carefully figure out - should be ok to figure if you are/have an experienced groundwater hydrologist.

hope that helps somewhat,
Vishal

Hi,
please have a look at the test scripts that have been developed to
verify the correct computation of r.gwflow:

https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/browser/grass/trunk/raster/r.gwflow/testsuite/validation_7x7_grid.py
https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/browser/grass/trunk/raster/r.gwflow/testsuite/validation_excavation.py

Please be aware, that r.gwflow is a very simple groundwater
computation tool. Many steps in groundwater modelling must be
performed outside of r.gwflow, like calibration, temporally changing
of boundary conditions, weather conditions and so on.

Best regards
Soeren

Thanks all for your tips and contributions.
It’s encouraging that the model performed well under complex conditions. I think our situation is quite simple and straightforward.

Best regards,
Huub
