-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

The Grassflyer Version 1.0 is available now:

http://www.geog.fu-berlin.de/~malte/grassflyer_v1.pdf

I will order 5000 hardcopies soon, which leads me to another issue.

How can we distribute them over the world? Dylan suggests
to bulk mail them to central locations and find some people who can
distribute them in those regions.

There have been several request to get the LaTeX template for public
consumption / translation. I will put it on a SVN (anonymous login
than) in the next days (hopefully :-)).

Cheers
Malte

hi Malte,

great job.

Please fix the following things:

* UMS Mapserver -> UMN Mapserver
* add ERDAS IMG as it is rather important

Not involved in the designing process at all (and probably too late) I
am just curious if the white place under the OSGeo paragraph one page 1
could be used to add the German GRASS-usergroup GAV e.V. with logo and a
short description in there?
This is certainly a good place to show that there is a tax-exempt
charity, at least for german GRASS users, since 2000!

Comments?!

What a fantastic job! very well done!

I have a question about the page formatting. the page size in adobe says “11.69 x 8.27”. I can check off “shrink oversized pages to paper size” and print, and it seems to retain the quality ok. Is the page size intentional?

What a great service to the community. That is fantastic.

To chip in at this late stage as well: Shouldn't we put the "Where to find more information" at the top, as this is directly related to the preceding information, and the OSGEO + any other (GAV, ...) beneath ?

Great job !

297 x 210 mm is a standard paper size:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A4_paper_size

Moreover, it's *the* standard paper size outside of North America.
US "Letter" paper is quite hard to obtain in Europe. Printers,
photocopiers etc which will accept it are even harder to find (and
may also require a 110-Volt supply).

For portability, it's quite common to format documents to 279x210mm,
so that they fit on both A4 (297x210mm) and Letter (279x216mm) paper.

The flyer is part of a SVN on unfug.holl-land.de.
But if there are more people to work on it is a good idea to place it in
the Add-On SVN.

As Glynn Clement below has already mentioned, metric paper sizes are
*the* standard.

I recognize there are a variety of "standard" paper sizes, but given the 11"
limitation, i have to shrink the PDF to fit the page at a 9% reduction.

There is no variety. There are standard metric sizes and non-standard
American sizes. Any other sizes are pretty much marginal.

Given the FLOSS's nature, it is only logical to keep to the standards,
even if a minority feels uncomfortable with that. But if we didn't keep
to the standards, we might as well go and write closed-source freeware
instead.

Thanks for your understanding.

Hello Markus,

I don't see any SVN there - is it publicly accessible?

It is not "visible" and not public yet, no. It just answers using svn
with user/pwd currently.

Personaly I vote for transporting it to grass-addons-repo, because
eveything on a centralized place is a good idea.

The first question from Malte to me for a place of collaborate work was
the SVN on "unfug", the existence of the add-on-svn wasn't in my mind at
this moment.

I agree with Stephan, to place it in a centralized place.

As Glynn Clement below has already mentioned, metric paper sizes are
*the* standard.

What I said was:

Moreover, it's *the* standard paper size outside of North America.

Within North America, the situation is the other way around; finding
paper, printers etc for the ISO paper sizes is almost as hard as
finding Letter-size equivalents elsewhere.

Suffice to say, most Americans won't have ready access to a printer
which can print a full A4 page.

Given the FLOSS's nature, it is only logical to keep to the standards,
even if a minority feels uncomfortable with that.

The logical thing to do would be to format the document to fit on both
A4 and Letter paper.
