[GRASS-user] grass 6.3cvs stability

hello there,

i just installed Grass 6.3CVS..this is my first time
to use it after several attempts of installing it..my
promotor would like us to use this software here in
europe rather than using the expensive commercial
software..since it is under development, may i know if
its possible to import/open ESRI shapefiles? I DONT
KNOW HOW TO DO IT, i dont have any knowledge in
language programming or any other computer courses as
well, im just a student with other technical field of
specialization..Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

It's easy to import ESRI shapefiles. Just do file/import/Vector map/Multiple
formats using GDAL and follow the directions. But...
Grass is much more finicky about explicitly specifying locations and
resolutions than ArcGis so it really helps to read the tutorial material on
how Grass works with regions and mapsets.

And one other thing about shapefiles. It is possible to specify a shapefile
that doesn't include projection information. Grass imports it as an xy
projection (ie no projection). So make sure your shapefile has a .prj file
associated with it.

Regards, Jerry

Hi Precila,

GRASS can import shape files or open it.

just use the gis manager or the command line option

v.in.ogr dsn=yourshapefile.shp output=yourvectorfile

or take a closer look at

http://grass.itc.it/grass63/manuals/html63_user/v.in.ogr.html

Hi Precila,

from the help page:

Flags:
-l List available layers in data source and exit

so when you used the list flag it exited before importing anything.

try this:

v.in.ogr dsn=C:/ESRI/ESRIDATA/WORLD/CITIES.SHP output=cities.grc

which is the same as this:

v.in.ogr dsn=C:/ESRI/ESRIDATA/WORLD/ layer=CITIES output=cities.grc

Hamish

Hi
as far as I see, you used the -l switch which causes v.in.ogr to list all available layer and exit without importing the shape file. Just turn out that switch
(on the command line:

v.in.ogr dsn=C:/ESRI/ESRIDATA/WORLD/CITIES.SHP output=cities.grc min_area=0.0001 snap=-1

or disable the button in the gis manager)

and than it must work. normally a status of the import is displayed. You can check if the import worked on the command line with:

g.list vect

Hi Hamish,

i tried your suggestion by opening grass and typing
the command straight on the Output GIS.m panel (lower
half of the panel) then RUN it;

v.in.ogr dsn=C:/ESRI/ESRIDATA/WORLD/CITIES.SHP
output=cities.grc

how will i open it now?..i was looking for the file
cities.grc but cant find it, was it automatically
saved on my default location or somewhere else? my
default dataset is Spearfish60 PERMANENT. wil i open
it using file/workspace/open or using
file/import/vector map??? ..im having difficulty with
this. thanks a lot.

Hello Precila,

when you run

g.list vect

on the command line all available vector files are listed in the location you are working. Does your imported cities.grc appear?
