[GRASS-user] GRASS 6 under solaris

Hi,

does anybody on the list has current experiences compiling GRASS 6 under solaris
8 or maybe even built binaries for it? Any information about this topic would be
helpful.

thanks a lot,
Otto

Hello Otto
I have some Solaris binaries on here:
ftp://ftp.qub.ac.uk/pub/users/paulk/grass/
Not too up-to-date though, and they required some packages from http://sunfreeware.com/ (can't remember which ones but should be obvious from runtime error messages I think).

I don't remember there being any big issues with compiling it - do you have any specific problems?

Paul

Hi Paul,

that sounds promissing and no, I haven't even started yet and don't know if I
get remote access to that mashine at all. I was just asked, if there are any
known problems and if it is possible. Because I don't have any experiences with
GRASS on solaris yet, that's why i asked in advance.

thanks a lot,
  Otto

Yes, I can confirm that it is possible, I've done it also. Most problems
I had were related to compiling GRASS as a 64bit application in a mixed
environment, i.e. the system was not completely 64bit. In the end,
everything else worked except r.terraflow which I still cannot compile
on Solaris' own CC. (Bug report is pending. Errors are myriad, and
probably cumulative., and I just don't have the time nowadays.)
If I remember correctly, I first compiled GRASS as an ordinary 32bit
application, and then everything worked nice.

Harri,

thanks a lot, I guess it would be an ordinary 32bit machine. If I get a chance
to try I will report ... maybe add some notes to wiki...

best,
Otto
