I tried compressing it and moving the compressed file to the server, that worked.
Great.
I’d never heard of rsync before - that sounds like an elegant solution, I’ll try that one.
Absolutely - especially, if you copy the data regularly. But even for a single copy of a larger amount of data, rsync is quite useful.
Otherwise I at least have the tarball version on the server now.
True - that’s always useful.
Thanks!
Pleasure,

OS desktop and server? permission issues? Are hidden files copied? is the server hdd full? File system on desktop and server? If the desktop allows files >4GB, does the server as well? How did you copy?
What about archiving on desktop, and extracting archive on server?
Questions over questions.
Good question questions
OS desktop is OpenSUSE 11.4, permission issues might have been the problem but I made sure by trying to copy them this time as root (this computer recognizes the folder as belonging to root, for whatever reason, so theoretically I would have had issues, although I never do with the other computers). Hidden files should be copied - I did a drag and drop operation with the file manager and that should copy hidden files contained in the copied folders (at least that’s the way it works when I test it out on my desktop, but since the command behind the copying is probably cp it should work the same when I copy it to a server). Server HDD still has lots of room, more than a TB. File system is on the desktop is Ext4, I can’t find any documentation on the NAS server but it’s a Black Armor from Seagate and I assume it’s NTFS internally. I use CIFS to talk to it. It’s definitely got files on it that are > 4 GB.
Archiving on the desktop and moving the archive to the server is a good idea, I’ll try it out and report back
Or you could try rsync - usually the best for these kind of things.
