[GRASS-user] GRASS through the eyes of ARC user

Please examine the conclusion arrived at by an Indian
Department involved in GIS.

"ArcInfo/ArcGIS, a vector based GIS, has evolved since
early 1980s and has many more functionalities than the
vector module of GRASS. The Visualisation and map
layout are much better, which is lacking in GRASS. The
Enterprise GIS is mainly vector based and GRASS cannot
be immediate substitute"

Is GRASS really lacking when it comes to Enterprise
GIS

complete opinion, and completely wrong. Considering the vector advances with GRASS, it will not be long before it is a feature for feature comparison. The core essence of Enterprise GIS is heavily built around the relational database management system and database middleware/broker, more so than the “vector editing” software component.

GRASS can be used in an enterprise GIS situation. Enterprise GIS does not consist of a single software, but rather it is the combination of several technologies that create this enterprise system.

here’s just one replacement lineup for enterprise GIS, while recognizing there are other viable alternatives. Enterprise GIS under an ESRI solution is tens of thousands of dollars:

GIS vector topology editing software
arcmap/arcinfo vs GRASS

GIS backend RDBMS:
no ESRI database vs. PostgreSQL

Database Middleware/Broker:
ArcSDE vs. PostGIS

GIS End user and/or Cartography:
ArcView vs. Quantum GIS

Web Deployment of GIS Data:
ArcIMS vs. Mapserver

GIS Toolset:
ArcToolbox vs. GDAL / OGR

Hardware
Windows vs. Linux
(if windows is the answer here, your asking the wrong question. Since ESRI dumped the UNIX community in year 2000 and wrote ArcMap strictly for Windows, there are inherent issues with building enterprise GIS around a windows/ESRI system)

It has a useful diagram of an Enterprise GIS suite built from FOSS components.

Don't forget FOSS on the Mac! It's a much easier sell to management than
converting an office to Linux as there is reduced risk of investing a lot
in a system which noone knows how to use for anything else.
