Hello all,
the 2nd version of the grass borchure is available here:

www.geog.fu-berlin.de/~malte/flyer_v02.pdf

2 more questions:
1. Captions for the figures? yes no? Are they just appetizers or
should they give more informations?

2. I don't know why there's a page number on the first page. It
shouldn't be there by default and even with \pagestyle{empty} it stays
there. Any hints?

Greets

Maybe " http://grass.itc.it " below the logo in the fist page?

also there is something like a " I " in front of "What is GRASS"...

looking good!

Hi,

I'm not of the developing team for the flyer, but I'm a LaTeX user and I
want to give you some advices, if I may.

IMHO, captions need to be there. But please, do not use the default
\caption command. Check for the package 'caption' and use it to
configure the appearance of the captions. In particular, there's no need
for 'Figure 1' in every caption.

2. I don't know why there's a page number on the first page. It

Try using \thispagestyle{empty} right after the first sectioning
command (or after \begin{document}). I do not have the sources to look
for, so I cannot be more helpful.

Another pair of ideas.

Firstly, 8 Mbs for this flyer is way too much. I suggest to check for
the dimensions of the images included and rescaling them to smaller
dimensions if they are too big. This would decrease the total size of
the file by at least 10 times.

One minor change can be the links typewrited in monospaced font (and in
blue, if possibile); may be too obvious, but I think it is more clear.

If you need some help, I'm here.

Bye.

Hi Malte,

Could you please send me a list of links (or a tarball) containing the
*original* files for the pictures? Converting them to a vectorial format
(like .eps) when they are a bitmap pictures (like png or jpg) is not a
good idea; also, in the same time, I eventually scale them down. The
GRASS logo is ok, the others aren't. I'm working to convert the source
to pdflatex.

Hope to hear from you soon, cheers,

Hi Emiliano,

to be honest, for me the pictures were just placeholders or better
suggestions. I got them all from the GRASS project homepage (low
resolution) to give an idean how the flyer should be.

I asked the community in one of my previous mails if anyone has better
quality images, but except one (thx Otto Dassau) I got no reply...

But here are the links for the pix (except the GRASS logo):

Raster:
http://grass.itc.it/grass61/screenshots/raster.php

Trento3d
http://grass.itc.it/grass61/screenshots/vector.php

Network Distance (Otto Dassau):
http://www.nature-consult.de/dassau/muell/isodist_spearfish.ppm

Groundwater contamination:
http://grass.itc.it/grass60/screenshots/viz.php

OSGeo logo:
https://www.osgeo.org/logos/

I still wonder if we can use all the pictures or if we need the
permission of the people who made them... Maybe we could create some
fancy new images... Or someone of the community can provides us some...

I used pdflatex to create the second version of the flyer as well,
which produces IMHO better results...

Cheers
Malte
